Breast Reduction Operation in Men
Gynecomastia can occur in 3 different ways which are hormonal, fat-based and fat glandular type gynecomastia. Breast reduction operations in men are applied with different techniques due to different gynecomastia types.
· Hormonal gynecomastia (glandular type):
If gynecomastia is caused by hormonal imbalances, this is classified as hormonal gynecomastia. As everyone knows, human body has both oestrogen (female hormone) and testosterone (male hormone). Oestrogen is dominant in female body and testosterone is dominant in male body. If oestrogen levels of male body increases, this would trigger rounder body shape, breast development and gynecomastia. In this type of gynecomastia, breast tissue increases and liposuction and excision operations are applied together for reduction.
· Fat-based gynecomastia:
This is a common type of gynecomastia. When weight is gained, fat tissue accumulates in breast tissue. If breast muscles are not exercised, this fat cannot be burnt and gynecomastia occurs. Liposuction breast reduction will be enough for this type.
· Fat-glandular type gynecomastia:
This is the type when both types of gynecomastia occur together. Compared to other two gynecomastia types, liposuction and excision are applied together.
Breast Aesthetic in Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia can occur in both breasts or on one breast. For men who experience large breasts due to fat accumulation, liposuction is enough. This intervention method offers highly successful results and this method is applied by reducing breast size by applying 1-2 cm large incisions. This method can be applied with local anaesthesia however general anaesthesia is more common. Mild bumps and bruises are normal after the surgery and all these are temporary.
If breast tissue is large, classical surgical methods are applied as breast reduction method. Area around the nipple is cut with 2-3 cm diameter and operation is completed under general anaesthesia. If classical breast reduction operation is combined with liposuction, procedure starts with liposuction and operation is applied afterwards.
Regardless of the method, to achieve best results from breast reduction operation, it is important to follow all advices of the doctor. Gaining weight after the operation may decrease success rate of the operation.
